This is Newton's diagram of the colours of the spectrum.
He worked extensively with the spectrum in his investigation of
colour and colour perception. He could see as well
as anyone that the spectrum is linear. His genius lay in
his realisation that the red and violet ends of the spectrum
have similarities. Hence his representation of the
spectrum as a colour circle.
The capital letters are his attempt to relate
the colours to the seven musical notes of the diatonic scale.

"Roy G. Biv" is the mnemonic for
the Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet colours
that Newton saw in the spectrum.
